Cheng-xi
Cathedral, around the early years of 20th century, by W.E.Soothill
Cheng-xi
Cathedral (West Urban Cathedral) sat in No.78 Cheng-xi Street in today's
downtown was initially built in 1878 and later burnt down. It was
reconstructed in 1898 with a building area of 1450 square meters. Facing the
east, the church has a church hall in the front and a little evangelical
chapel in the back, and 12 other rooms as well. The cathedral, whose main
building is characterized by Gothic style, is the most magnificent church
building in the city. This photo was taken around the early years of 20th
century, when there used to be a small dock right in front of it but
Cheng-xi Street hadn’t come into being yet.
